If you are a Christian, what do you think happens when you die? Does your soul wait for Jesus' return or....?

..does it wait in paradise? I've heard both, that the souls of the dead will be awaken upon Jesus return, and that the souls of the dead (that linger in "Paradise") will ascend to heaven with Jesus upon his return. Which is it? Please provide scriptures to back up your answer.
