Is the battle tactic deployed by Democratic Wisconsin law makers good, bad or ugly?

When faced with a very tough situation, Democratic members of the Wisconsin legislature left the State and left the people whom they are suppose to represent carry on the fight by themselves. While it is true that these law makers have the right to walk out and that they are facing a no-win situation, was this the right battle tactic or should they have stayed and put up some fight or even some sort of symbolic defense? The Republican members of the US Congress faced a similar fate with health care reform, but they, at least, stayed and put up as much fight as they could. What say you?
