What is a dutch oven and how do you use it?
Technically and originally the dutch oven is a large, deep, round pot that sits on three short legs with a cover and bail. Made from cast iron. I use one to camp with. You set it on coals, fill it with your food, throw the lid on that has a lip, and pour more coals on top which creates an oven environment within. Today's recipes, when referring to dutch oven, are simply talking about a large, round, deep, lidded pot. They usually come in a complete cookware set. Usually two saucepans, a skillet and a dutch oven. They can be used both on the stove top and in the oven, depending on temperature required for recipe. Look for a enameled cast iron one. It will last you forever and is virtually indestructible. Good luck with your cooking!
